{"id":11802,"date":"2021-03-09T13:49:13","date_gmt":"2021-03-09T13:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/?p=11802"},"modified":"2022-10-30T08:19:56","modified_gmt":"2022-10-30T08:19:56","slug":"bisexual-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/bisexual-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Bisexual Youth Face Unique Challenges"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>This March marks the eight annual Bisexual+ Health Awareness Month, an event founded by the <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/biresource.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Bisexual Resource Center<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>.<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Below, Rory Gory (Digital Marketing Manager at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/virtual-pride-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Trevor Project<\/a>) shares their thoughts on the specific challenges facing the bisexual community. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, a new Gallup poll <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/329708\/lgbt-identification-rises-latest-estimate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that 5.6% of U.S. adults identify as LGBT. More than half (54.6%) identify as bisexual, meaning they have the capacity to be attracted to and\/or form relationships with more than one gender. However, despite being the largest group within the LGBTQ community, bisexual people are all too often erased.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must all come together to support bi youth and root out biphobia: the fear and intolerance of people who experience attraction to people of more than one gender. This prejudice still very much exists\u2014even within LGBTQ spaces\u2014and it\u2019s having a real impact on the mental health and safety of bi young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1-3-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/1-3-768x447.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>One common biphobic stereotype you\u2019ve probably come across is that all people are either gay or straight, and that bi people are just \u2018going through a phase.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Add that to a slew of other harmful notions\u2014that bi people are overly promiscuous, more likely to cheat, and unable to commit to monogamous relationships. All too often, the very existence and legitimacy of bisexuality is questioned or denied outright.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prevalence of these stereotypes and \u201cbi-erasure\u201d in general invalidates the large number of people who <em>do<\/em> experience multi-gender attraction and relationships throughout their lives. And such attitudes aren\u2019t just offensive\u2014they can contribute to a higher risk for depression, suicidal ideation, and violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/2019\/03\/26\/research-brief-bisexual-youth-experience\/%23sm.0000bzjnp9n8rfopve021hyefmyjz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent research<\/a>, almost half of bi youth seriously considered suicide in the past year. Approximately 66% of these young people reported feeling sad or hopeless for two or more weeks in a row in the past year, compared to 27% of their heterosexual peers and 49% of their gay or lesbian peers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This data should not be interpreted to mean that bisexual youth are inherently prone to poor mental health outcomes and suicide because of their identity. Bi youth, like all LGBTQ youth, are at a higher risk because of increased experiences with victimization. Reported rates of bullying, harassment, sexual assault, and physical dating violence are especially high among bi people compared to their peers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Supporting bisexual youth starts with improving awareness. It\u2019s important to understand that bisexuality is just one of <em>many<\/em> multisexual identities\u2014an umbrella term for people who are attracted to more than one gender.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of multisexual identities include pansexual, omnisexual, and asexual biromantic. Some people may use more than one identity label to describe themselves, like those who use bisexual and pansexual interchangeably. Other people choose not to label their sexuality at all. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, LGBTQ youth in the U.S. are using more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetrevorproject.org\/survey-2020\/?section=Diversity-of-Gender-Identity-Sexual-Orientation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">100 different combinations of terms<\/a> to describe their sexual orientation and gender identity, with many deploying a combination of terms to explain their unique sexual and romantic attractions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/2-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/2-2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/2-2-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/2-2-768x622.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Youth-serving organizations like the Trevor Project must embrace the diversity of youth identity in order to be effective and to better understand (and help) younger generations. We know based on the work we do every day that respecting and affirming an LGBTQ young person\u2019s identity is essential to their health and well-being.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, accurately assessing the <em>nuances<\/em> of LGBTQ identities is critical in academic, clinical, and organizational settings. We need to raise awareness on how young people are identifying and expressing themselves to better inform policies, programs, and practices aimed at improving outcomes among LGBTQ youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But where does that leave you, if you\u2019re not engaged with the community professionally? Well, you don\u2019t need to be an expert in multisexual identities to make a difference in the life of a bisexual young person\u2014you just need to listen, be affirming, and have empathy.
