{"id":1988,"date":"2017-11-14T07:55:16","date_gmt":"2017-11-14T07:55:16","guid":{"rendered":"\/blog\/?p=1988"},"modified":"2025-10-30T14:29:33","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T14:29:33","slug":"thanksgiving-2017-transparency-chronicle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/thanksgiving-2017-transparency-chronicle\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanksgiving Transparency &#8217;17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a hectic four months since our last Transparency Chronicle &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-h1-underwriting-report-2017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lemonade&#8217;s H1 Underwriting Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0&#8211; during which we launched major products, <a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-expansion-united-states\/\">new geographies<\/a>, and took a stand on gun violence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With Thanksgiving \u2018round the corner, I want to reflect on how these milestones have been received, and share what we, Team Lemonade, are thankful for.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. The exponential power of technology<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/worlds-first-live-insurance-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rolled out in August, allowing members to change or update their policy coverage instantly, and with zero hassle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its impact? Well, nearly a quarter of Lemonaders have already used it to update their policy! That\u2019s many thousands of people who bypassed the insurance maze simply by tapping on their app. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lemonade Live Policy highlights one thing we\u2019re thankful for: the power of technology to lower costs while raising the bar. It\u2019s amazing what you can do when you replace brokers with bots&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Controlling our destiny<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zero Everything<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched in September, and we think it\u2019s a game-changer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your $1,000 laptop is stolen, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you expect your insurance to cough up $1,000. But that\u2019s not what happens. First, they knock off $500 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/insuropedia\/dictionary\/insurance-deductible\/\">for the insurance deductible<\/a>, then they hike your rates, and then the paperwork begins. It drives people crazy. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not malicious, mind you. Big insurers hate \u2018nuisance claims\u2019 (their term for your filched laptop) for good reason: it can cost them more in paperwork than the amount you\u2019re claiming! Given how their bureaucracy functions, deductibles and rate hikes are perfectly \u2018rational.\u2019 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where A.I. Jim, our claims bot, changes the game. A.I. Jim <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">loves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> small claims. He can settle them on the spot, with zero hassle and at <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no extra cost<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So if you opt for Zero Everything, you get 1 dollar for every 1 dollar lost: full replacement value, zero deductible, and no rate hikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Customers seem to really appreciate Zero Everything:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1991 size-large\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/good_karma-1-1024x575.png\" alt=\"Customer feedback - Zero Everything by Lemonade\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/good_karma-1-1024x575.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/good_karma-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/good_karma-1-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/good_karma-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the adoption of Zero Everything in Texas was twice as high as in California, which was 50% higher than Illinois! Curious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zero Everything highlights the second thing we\u2019re thankful for: controlling our own destiny. We have ambitious plans for changing the underlying insurance product, and we couldn\u2019t do that if we were just a broker. Innovations like Zero Everything require breakthrough tech, sure, but they\u2019d be impossible without also controlling our own underwriting, claims, and regulatory relations. To truly remake insurance, you need to be a full stack <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insurance company,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">technology company<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Neither one, on its own, will cut it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Building everything from scratch was the \u2018long short way,&#8217; but we\u2019re thankful we took it!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Our tech community<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/introducing-lemonade-insurance-api\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lemonade API<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched in October on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.producthunt.com\/posts\/the-lemonade-insurance-api\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Product Hunt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and opened Lemonade to the world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s this magical alignment of interests that happens when you open up to the community: new revenue potential for the host platform, and a quicker and cheaper way to launch new products to market. Plus, it just <\/span><b><i>makes sense<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you\u2019re a tech company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The reception? Over 400 businesses applied for early access to our API in the first 24 hours! Here\u2019s a breakdown of who registered:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1992 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/api_leads.png\" alt=\"Registrations to Lemonade's Insurance API\" width=\"730\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/api_leads.png 730w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/api_leads-300x238.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">APIs create a common language among tech-enabled companies across diverse industries. It means our bots can replicate endlessly and appear concurrently through a gazillion websites and apps. We think that\u2019s something to be thankful for!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>4. Values-based mission<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In October we<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">took a<\/span> <a href=\"\/blog\/insuring-guns-lemonade-takes-stand\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stand on guns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it was truly meaningful for us. We decided to limit the coverage on guns, and announced we would work to exclude coverage for assault weapons, and condition coverage on owners storing and using their firearm responsibly. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before publishing the post, Shai and I discussed the topic at length, and solicited feedback from our team and investors (a group with diverse political affiliations and views on gun rights). No one knew whether taking a stand would be a smart business move &#8211; but everyone thought it was the right thing to do. So we did it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lemonade is a B-Corp, and trying to do the \u2018right thing\u2019 is an important part of our culture. We sincerely believe insurance can regain its stature as a force for social good. We also believe in being bold and transparent &#8211; even at the risk of backlash. <\/span><\/p>\n\t<div class=\"tweet-block-container\">\r\n\t\t<div class=\"tweet-content\">\r\n\t\t\t<p><i class=\"fa fa-quote-left\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=To+our+thinking%2C+we+don%E2%80%99t+deserve+to+be+a+standout+company+if+we%E2%80%99re+not+willing+to+stand+out&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lemonade.com%2Fblog%2Fthanksgiving-2017-transparency-chronicle%2F&via=Lemonade_Inc\" target=\"_blank\">To our thinking, we don\u2019t deserve to be a standout company if we\u2019re not willing to stand out <\/a><i class=\"fa fa-quote-right\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/p>\r\n\t\t<\/div>\r\n\t\t<div><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=To+our+thinking%2C+we+don%E2%80%99t+deserve+to+be+a+standout+company+if+we%E2%80%99re+not+willing+to+stand+out&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lemonade.com%2Fblog%2Fthanksgiving-2017-transparency-chronicle%2F&via=Lemonade_Inc\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"tweet_now_link\"><i class=\"fa fa-lg fa-twitter\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><span>Tweet this!<\/span><\/a><\/div>\r\n\t<\/div>\r\n  \n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 85,000 people have read the post so far, and my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/guns-why-lemonade-taking-stand-daniel-schreiber\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LinkedIn page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Lemonade\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Lemonade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became lightning rods for some of the more extreme comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many surmised I don\u2019t know the first thing about guns (for better, or worse, I do). Others decided I\u2019m a communist, or a pacifist, or a jerk, or that I don\u2019t understand the need for US citizens to protect themselves by force from their tyrannical government (I\u2019ll cop to that one).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2011 size-large\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bad_comments-1-1024x840.png\" alt=\"Feedback on Guns Coverage Announcement by Lemonade\" width=\"1024\" height=\"840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bad_comments-1-1024x840.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bad_comments-1-300x246.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bad_comments-1-768x630.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bad_comments-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for every one negative comment, the post received 5 likes; and many, many members of our community took a stand with us. Here are some emails we received:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1995 size-large\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/emails-1024x821.png\" alt=\"Positive feedback on Lemonade's gun coverage update\" width=\"1024\" height=\"821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/emails-1024x821.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/emails-300x241.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/emails-768x616.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/emails.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, Facebook and LinkedIn comments skewed negative, while <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/lemonade_inc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> and replies to our email were overwhelmingly positive. Reddit attracted the most dynamic debate, and was our biggest source of traffic that day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An intriguing metric from the first 24 hours after posting: there was an almost 8% increase in male traffic, but a 4% drop in purchases by men, while the numbers for women were the mirror image of that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1994 size-large\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/gun_post_affection-1024x554.png\" alt=\"Lemonade's gun coverage update - affect on audience by gender\" width=\"1024\" height=\"554\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/gun_post_affection-1024x554.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/gun_post_affection-300x162.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/gun_post_affection-768x416.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/gun_post_affection.png 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the business impact? We had 20 customers cancel their policy in protest (less than 0.05%), and we didn\u2019t see a slow in sales. We\u2019re really thankful for that!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which brings me to #5&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>5. Our Lemonade community<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, we launched in Nevada, bringing the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/lemonade-goes-global\">states we\u2019re live in<\/a> to seven (we\u2019re now licensed in 22, so more coming soon!).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1999 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/map.png\" alt=\"States in which Lemonade insurance is live\" width=\"994\" height=\"699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/map.png 994w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/map-300x211.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/map-768x540.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 994px) 100vw, 994px\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, we\u2019ve sold 70,000 policies so far this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quarter of them in the past 30 days alone:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2000 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/weekly_sales.png\" alt=\"weekly sales since lemonade insurance company launch in 2016\" width=\"660\" height=\"661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/weekly_sales.png 660w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/weekly_sales-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/weekly_sales-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/>But this isn\u2019t just a numbers game: our members are an incredible bunch of people.
