If you were one of the customers we said no to, it\u2019s not personal; it\u2019s probably because of our underwriting guidelines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an insurance company, we have the responsibility to keep your best interest at heart. In order to build our business for the long-run, we choose to focus on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/precision-underwriting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain types of properties<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which means we can\u2019t insure <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> type of property.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0That said, we\u2019re constantly updating our underwriting appetite, and as we expand and improve, our guidelines will too.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/transparency\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transparency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one of our guiding principles at Lemonade, we\u2019re here to tell you exactly why we sometimes say no.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What we look for when writing a policy<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/image-2-1024x357.png\" alt=\"transparency at lemonade insurance\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Risks we\u2019re not ready to handle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Lemonade could sell an insurance policy for a 22-bedroom mansion, but that homeowner will probably need more unique coverages than we can offer today (protecting that Warhol on the wall, for instance!). The same goes for pet insurance. When it comes to your furry friends, Lemonade loves all animals\u2014but right now we can only offer coverage to dogs and cats who meet our age guidelines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>High-risk properties<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Risks are always tricky to determine. A \u2018high risk\u2019 policy doesn\u2019t mean these people don\u2019t need insurance, or are not good customers. It simply means the right price for them is much higher than for typical customers. If we decide to insure them, we need to price them accurately, and differently from everyone else\u2026 Otherwise we\u2019d have to raise the price for everyone to cover that risk. And that\u2019s not necessarily fair, either. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/precision-underwriting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re working on perfecting this.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Risks that are unique<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Lemonade has to exclude certain types of homes, pets, and cars because the risks involved are unique. For example, homes that are rented out for short-term stays are a larger liability and theft risk since they are often unoccupied. Homes that are under construction propose an increased risk of fire since they don\u2019t usually have people on-site at all times.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to cars, if you have an antique, classic, exotic or high-performance car, we\u2019re, unfortunately, not quite ready to offer the special coverage and attention they require. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many more variables with these risk types, and in order to get the coverage and pricing right we need to consider and understand the complexities. We\u2019re not quite there yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Potential for catastrophe: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance catastrophes are things like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/homeowners\/explained\/fire-damage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or hurricanes. If we insure a lot of homes that could all potentially get damaged by the same event at the same time, it might be too risky for us at our stage and size. That means we currently limit coverage in areas with significant exposure to wildfire, hurricanes, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Transparency wins<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not easy being brutally honest, but Lemonade is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/lemonade-proves-trust-pays-off-big-time\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">built on transparency and trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We want to be sure to be open with you when we, unfortunately, have to decline your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re an insurance company that knows our limits\u2014so when we decline, we\u2019re doing so in the interest of everyone: customers, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/time-to-giveback\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charities we support<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and in the interest of building a new 100-year-old company for the long-term.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As an insurance company, we have the responsibility to ensure we have your best interest at heart.
