It has been a stellar 12 months, and we\u2019re pumped to share the numbers and secrets behind what went down!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro Tip: Before you go on reading, hit play to get into the perfect mood:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Beastie Boys - Intergalactic\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qORYO0atB6g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Project Watchtower<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call it fate, or coincidence&#8230; On November 8, 2018, about 30 minutes before the devastating California Camp Fire was discovered, we launched something dramatic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We call it Project Watchtower, and it\u2019s our new eye in the sky. Watchtower uses machine learning to analyze signals coming from orbiting satellites to detect catastrophic events around the globe. We hooked our in-house bot, Cooper, to a raw data feed coming from NASA\u2019s Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer. Cooper analyzes each pixel, looking for fire outbursts, based on colors and heat signatures. Our hearts go out to the families who lost their loved ones, the injured, and individuals who lost their homes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As soon as we detected the fires, our claims team switched on our Catastrophe Response Procedure and formed a war room, focusing most of our energy on that area. The team ended up relocating 71 families to safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4966 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/reviews-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"708\" height=\"1007\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/reviews-1.png 708w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/reviews-1-211x300.png 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 708px) 100vw, 708px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These people lost their homes to the flames and were left with no place to stay. Quite recently, AI Jim was promoted to Senior AI Claims Manager. AI Jim is now responsible for controlling our claims inflow, smartly and efficiently assigning incoming claims to our human CLX team, based on skill set, complexity, availability, and more. AI Jim even introduces our claimants to their Lemonade claims advocates, so they can start working on their case quicker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI Maya has been busy as well. Built on our advanced CX.ai technology which I briefly introduced in the <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-review-2017\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 Year in Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, AI Maya is now an infinitely scalable, highly efficient, AI-powered bot. With CX.ai, users not only get customized, instant answers to complex questions, but they can make changes to their policies and take action in what feels like a quick conversation with a friend. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, CX.ai functionality is added to most new features, making our AI smarter and more capable with every product update.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"CX.ai - How NLP and Natural Action Synthesis (NAS) works at Lemonade\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WECbL_Dl0XE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the chart below, you can see the impact of adding CX.ai capability to a new feature. In this example, we taught AI Maya to handle the entire process of moving a customer to a new home. It\u2019s a complex process which includes canceling their old policy, evaluating the risk of the new address, generating an accurate price, and producing a new policy &#8211; all instantly:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4939 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/moving_flow.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"966\" height=\"628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/moving_flow.png 966w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/moving_flow-300x195.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/moving_flow-768x499.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Loss Ratio, On Track<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the start of the year, we announced we\u2019d focus on our Loss Ratio (the percent of the money collected that is paid out in claims &#8211; a key parameter in insurance). We weren\u2019t doing so well then, and that was ok. Why? Because insurance is about big data and the law of large numbers &#8211; so you\u2019ve got to reach scale before you can act effectively on Loss Ratio. We\u2019re not yet where we want to be, but our progress is on track, and makes me confident we can become best in class at this (more on this in Daniel\u2019s post <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/precision-underwriting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4979 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/loss_ratio_narrow-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"696\" height=\"668\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/loss_ratio_narrow-2.png 696w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/loss_ratio_narrow-2-300x288.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We entered 2018 with a 166% Loss Ratio. But thanks to dozens of advances like AI Jim and Project Watchtower, it\u2019s been shrinking consistently, ending the year in double digits. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>$50 billion in coverage<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the end of 2017, we had insured more than 100,000 homes. 12 months later, this number grew to 425,000, covering just shy of $50 billion in total insured value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve grown in market share as well. Less than a year from our initial launch in New York, we became the <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-insurance-crazy-market-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#1 renters insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> choice among first time renters statewide, capturing just over 1% market share. Now, less than two years later, we\u2019re over 6%! \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why\u2019s that nuts? Well, the average \u2018Top 10\u2019 homeowners insurance company in the US has a market share of 6.3%, and has been in business for 105 years!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 ended with $57m in sales, beating our annual target with 5X growth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4948 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"966\" height=\"378\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales.png 966w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales-768x301.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Q1 &#8217;18 sales topped $8.9m, representing a 1,357% increase from the same quarter the previous year.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Q2 &#8217;18 stood at $12.4m, and we ended Q3 &#8217;18 with $18.2m &#8211; more than 500% higher than Q3 &#8217;17. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then came Q4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How Daniel and I screwed up an entire quarter<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$17.7M in sales, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Q4 was our first ever down quarter. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We saw strong year-on-year growth in Q4 (237%) and comfortably met our annual targets, but we still see Q4 as a big miss, and it was all due to a single bad judgment call.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-4949 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales-qs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"966\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales-qs.png 966w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales-qs-300x221.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/sales-qs-768x567.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As I mentioned in my <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-transparency-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">last Transparency post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we wanted to test what would happen if we slowed growth somewhat, and put more focus on balancing portfolio risk. We started a series of experiments in Q3 that were supposed to last a few weeks, thinking they wouldn\u2019t have a significant impact on Q4.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they did. After ending the experiment, it took us much longer to regain momentum than anticipated. Halfway through Q4, we understood that we\u2019d screwed up the entire quarter. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a $5-10m mistake, making it one of our more expensive lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Lemonade users doing good!<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Team Lemonade more than doubled this year, going from 62 to 125 people, adding Customer Experience members, Claims Advocates, Data Scientists, Engineers, and new leadership members, including <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/jorge-espinel-joins-lemonade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jorge Espinel,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who left his position as Head of Global Business Development at Spotify to join Lemonade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/coming-to-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe just around the corner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the growing number of initiatives on our Squads\u2019 \u00a0boards, it\u2019s hard to keep track of everything that\u2019s going on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s for sure, though, is that as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company built on transparency and trust, we\u2019ll continue to take stands on things that matter. We\u2019ll use our best sense of what\u2019s right to guide us, with the belief that doing something is better than doing nothing. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, we committed <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/divest_coal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not to invest in coal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which followed <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/insuring-guns-lemonade-takes-stand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our stance on guns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing the right thing doesn\u2019t have a timeframe, or a due date, and is something we all need to weave into our day-to-day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December, we were privileged to partner with the Red Cross to help install smoke alarms in homes around New York City, together with our NYC-based policyholders!
