Eight Months In."},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"09fd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">In our previous Transparency Chronicle, we announced Lemonade\u2019s goal to become available to the majority of the US population by the end of 2017. Since then, things have gone a little nuts\u2026 There\u2019s a ton of stuff to cover, so let\u2019s get started.<\/p>\n<h3>Milestones are meant to be broken<\/h3>\n<p id=\"bf1a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">Last December, based on our initial launch results, we set ourselves a target of having 13,000 customers by the end of 2017. We modeled this based on the rapid growth of our first days in-market. We thought it was aggressive, but doable.<\/p>\n<p id=\"64bd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Fast forward five months. On a sunny Brooklyn morning, a young woman named Kelly bought a Lemonade renters policy. Little did she know, but that specific policy had special meaning. Btw, 2% of our customers are 65 or older.<\/p>\n<p id=\"cc41\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">We also discovered that many of our policyholders are entrepreneurs, freelancers, artists, designers, photographers, and singers, while others work for some of the world\u2019s most loved brands such as:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-650 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Brands.png\" alt=\"Where Lemonade members work\" width=\"1000\" height=\"75\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Brands.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Brands-300x23.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Brands-768x58.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d also like to take this opportunity to thank our customers who work for Liberty Mutual, State Farm, Allstate, Travelers, and Progressive. Don\u2019t worry guys, your secret is safe with us ;).<\/p>\n<h3>Claims, paid instantly!<\/h3>\n<p>We handled a total of 117 claims so far and happily paid $143,190 to our insured members. Remarkably,\u00a027% of the claims paid were handled and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/claims\">processed instantly<\/a>, from start to finish, by <a href=\"\/blog\/the-empathetic-bot\/\">AI Jim, Lemonade&#8217;s chatbot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One point that we didn\u2019t feel right about was the difference in the time it took AI Jim to handle a claim (<a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-sets-new-world-record\/\">3 seconds<\/a>) and the time banks took to move money from our account to our members&#8217;\u00a0(several days). That sucks.<\/p>\n<p>So we dug deeper and found a better way to send money to our members. Instead of wiring funds the traditional way, we now allow our users to receive claim payments directly to their debit cards, instantly!<\/p>\n<h3>Thoughts about expansion vs. focus<\/h3>\n<p id=\"91a5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">I discussed the \u2018local vs. global\u2019 dilemma in a recent post announcing Lemonade\u2019s nationwide <a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-expansion-united-states\/\">expansion plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4847\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">There are a lot of reasons why tech startups, and new businesses in general, should consider launching in a small, confined market. A highly motivated team, coupled with a culture of aggressive execution, can move mountains, fast.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"8b55\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--pullquote\">I believe that a business confining itself to a single market for too long will be at risk of becoming numb. Mostly, because local businesses have a different DNA and structure than national or <a href=\"\/blog\/world-flat-insurance-round\/\">global ones<\/a>. But it also has to do with the team\u2019s skill-set, available capital and the scalability of the product to support multiple timezones, geographies and even languages.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ff8d\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">As a US financial organization, we needed to design a system that would allow us to operate in many different regulatory environments and under very different laws. All, while maintaining a unified, seamless user experience.<\/p>\n<h3>Changing laws!<\/h3>\n<p id=\"45d7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">When you\u2019re a new kind of insurance carrier, launching a new state is tough. Even when the regulators are willing, as was the case in Florida, the law doesn\u2019t always oblige.<\/p>\n<p id=\"94fa\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Insurance laws were written for the old insurance industry, creating barriers for disruptive companies. So when we hit a wall with Florida\u2019s law, we worked with the Florida Senate to change it, and it worked!<\/p>\n<p id=\"f933\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Introducing the first Lemonade driven legislation. We call it: \u2018The Lemonade Act\u2019. (Hat tip: #FrankUnderwood)<\/p>\n<h3>Underwriting updates<\/h3>\n<p id=\"dd9a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">While we\u2019re investing in accelerating our growth, we also want to make sure that our portfolio remains balanced (that\u2019s insurance-speak for saying: we\u2019re taking on the right mix of risks). And so, in the last two quarters, we invested in <a href=\"\/blog\/precision-underwriting\/\">optimizing our underwriting algorithms<\/a>, taking a more restrictive\u00a0approach at first. We then learned, improved and made our system\u00a0smarter, using the large amounts of data gathered every second by our apps.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6c24\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">For example, we made some algorithm adjustments with the purpose of reducing exposure to elements such as coastal concentration. Unfortunately, this meant turning away a larger number of customers. Declining customers is always painful, but we\u2019re determined to build a sustainable business for the long run.<\/p>\n<p id=\"24fc\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">In the following chart, you can see the impact underwriting changes had on our declination rates.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_649\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-649\" class=\"wp-image-649 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-UW-Decline.png\" alt=\"Lemonade Home and Renters Insurance Underwriting\" width=\"800\" height=\"398\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-UW-Decline.png 800w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-UW-Decline-300x149.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-UW-Decline-768x382.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-649\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three updates in preparation for different states<\/p><\/div>\n<p>From a coverage perspective, we constantly track some key metrics that indicate the type of customers we\u2019re attracting. One of these metrics is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/homeowners\/explained\/reconstruction-cost-estimate\/\">Reconstruction Cost<\/a>. This value determines what the cost would be to rebuild your home from the ground up, should something catastrophic happen to it. It differs from your home\u2019s market value because it excludes the value of the land it\u2019s built on.<\/p>\n<p>Back in September 2016, we tracked an average of $264,500 in Reconstruction Costs. Today, this number has almost doubled, with our Reconstruction Cost average at around $480,000 per home.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-648 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-replacement-cost-trend.png\" alt=\"Lemonade Insurance Homeowners Replacement Cost Trend\" width=\"800\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-replacement-cost-trend.png 800w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-replacement-cost-trend-300x153.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/HO-replacement-cost-trend-768x392.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"8ce5\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">This is important. Why? It hints that our brand awareness and consumer trust is catching on, and that we\u2019re starting to climb upmarket. In other words, owners of higher value homes trust us to cover them.<\/p>\n<h3>Product releases<\/h3>\n<p id=\"a0d2\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h4\">With an average of 2.3 product updates per day (including weekends, people!!), I won\u2019t even try to list everything we\u2019ve done lately. Instead, I\u2019d like to focus on two things:<\/p>\n<p id=\"41fa\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The first is the addition of an Earthquake Insurance option for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/renters\/explained\/renters-insurance-california\/\">California renters<\/a> and homeowners. It\u2019s the first time we added an insurance carrier as a partner, and integrated it (almost) seamlessly into our flow. Adding earthquake coverage to your policy is really easy, and will become even simpler with a set of improvements we\u2019re pushing soon. I love this integration because it shows that we can easily scale the product and our system to work with other insurers and new products, while maintaining control of the customer experience, from buying policies to handling claims.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f33a\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The second update is the addition of some new self-serve features that previously required the involvement of our customer experience team.
