Because in most areas of life, we know it\u2019s important to base our spending decisions on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not guesswork.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when it comes to giving to charities, our reasoning tends to flip. Turns out, only 3% of people research how a charity spends their money before donating, according to a study by the Money for Good project.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means most of us give our money away without even knowing if it will actually make an impact.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It speaks to that fundamental question about charity: Why do people give to begin with?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why do people give?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/money.com\/money\/3611880\/charitable-giving-tips-advice-katherina-rosqueta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that giving is essentially a social act.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We choose causes to donate to based on personal experiences, or friends who are raising money for a particular organization. For example, a study by the University of San Diego shows that people give significantly more to their university if their former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/renters\/explained\/divide-expenses-roommates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">roommate<\/a> asks, instead of a complete stranger.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it\u2019s not just our friends and families who influence us. According to online donation platform JustGiving, if we see that a donor before us made a large donation, we\u2019ll most likely increase our own donation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1099\" height=\"620\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/givers-takers-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7268\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re also drawn to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immediate<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> causes, even if only a small number of people will be impacted. Malaria kills far more people than natural disasters such as earthquakes. But since this disease is ongoing and doesn\u2019t make the news as often, malaria charities don\u2019t evoke the same emotional urgency in us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, there\u2019s another reason why people give: the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warm Glow.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Warm Glow<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the late 1980s, economist James Andreoni argued that internal motives for giving were much more important than had previously been acknowledged. He came up with a name for his thesis \u2014 the warm-glow theory \u2014 and it stuck.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the warm-glow view of philanthropy, people aren\u2019t giving money to cure cancer; they\u2019re giving money to feel the \u2018glow\u2019 that comes with being <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> kind of <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">person<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who\u2019s helping to cure cancer.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in a study conducted at the University of Sussex, psychologists confirmed that Andreoni\u2019s \u2018Warm Glow\u2019 is scientifically proven.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their study, published in NeuroImage, analyzed existing research showing the brain scans of more than 1,000 people while they\u2019re making charitable decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, they split the analysis between what happens in the brain when people act out of genuine altruism \u2013 where there\u2019s nothing in it for them \u2013 and when they act with strategic kindness \u2013 when there is something to be gained as a consequence.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Sussex scientists found that reward areas of the brain are more active \u2013 i.e. use up more oxygen \u2013 when people act with strategic kindness.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they also found that acts of altruism, with no hope of personal benefit, activate the reward areas of the brain, too. Some areas of the brain were even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> active during altruistic generosity, indicating there is something unique about being altruistic with no hope of gaining something in return.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"293\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Money-To-Love-1.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7270\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do we need to give better?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem is, things like the &#8216;Warm Glow&#8217; can distract us from giving to the charities that need it most.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Richard Vevers, founder of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Ocean Agency<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told us:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople believe causes receive far more support than they actually do.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The environment is a great example &#8211; only about 1% of charitable giving in the US goes towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/climate-change-solutions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protecting the environment<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The situation for ocean conservation is even worse. It attracts less than 0.2% of charitable giving, even though it is one of the world&#8217;s biggest challenges &#8211; <a href=\"\/blog\/the-plastic-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">keeping the ocean healthy<\/a> is essential to all life on Earth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need to try and find ways to optimize our giving so it makes the most impact.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Effective Altruism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s where effective altruism comes in.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coined by University of Oxford professor William MacAskill, effective altruism looks at how we can do as much good as possible with the resources we have at our disposal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altruism means wanting to help other people; but adding in the effectiveness component is a more complex idea &#8211; because it\u2019s about doing something <\/span><b>well<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MacAskill gives a simple example:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cImagine you could save five people from drowning, or you could save one person from drowning. It\u2019s a tragic situation and you can\u2019t save both. So, you choose to save the five, rather than the one, because there are five times as many interests at stake.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, if you give to one charity, you might save one life. But if you give the same amount of money to another charity, you might save hundreds of lives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When evaluating a charity, effective altruism suggests we should prioritize these characteristics:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scale &#8211; <em>how many lives are impacted?<br><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neglect &#8211; <em>how many resources have already been devoted to it?<br><\/em><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solvability<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; would additional resources solve the problem once and for all?<\/span><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Story<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;a tech nonprofit (and Lemonade Giveback partner) dedicated to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newstorycharity.org\/lemonade-a-new-approach-to-corporate-donations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building affordable homes for disaster victims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are over one billion people living without access to adequate shelter (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scale)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and traditional homebuilding alone is unable to meet the demand for shelter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(neglect)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, New Story partnered with a homebuilding robotics company to develop the first 3D home printer, designed to build a new home in under 24 hours <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(solvability)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this type of innovative thinking that effective altruists are aiming for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another Lemonade Giveback partner that works to ensure effective altruism is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charity: water.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They treat their social impact arm and operations sides of their business differently &#8211; they have separate purposes, fundraising goals, and bank accounts.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means charity: water can guarantee that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every public dollar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> donated helps bring clean water to people in need &#8211; so you never need to worry that your money is not going where it\u2019s supposed to.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, with 1 in 10 people lacking access to clean water, the scale of the issue at hand is huge.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Choosing a cause<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Lemonade, social impact is baked into our profit model through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/giveback\">Lemonade <\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/giveback\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giveback<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"513\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-2.51.35-PM-1024x513.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23624\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-2.51.35-PM-1024x513.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-2.51.35-PM-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-2.51.35-PM-768x385.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-2.51.35-PM-1536x770.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Screenshot-2026-01-09-at-2.51.35-PM.png 1560w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When you get your first policy, you choose a cause you care about, and Lemonade donates to nonprofits supporting those causes.
