{"id":8928,"date":"2020-09-17T07:31:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-17T07:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/?p=8928"},"modified":"2023-01-01T09:34:03","modified_gmt":"2023-01-01T09:34:03","slug":"covered-by-lemonade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/covered-by-lemonade\/","title":{"rendered":"The Story of #CoveredByLemonade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why would anyone follow an insurance company on Instagram?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two years ago, we set out to find out. Up until then, we had been posting photographs on Instagram, but it didn\u2019t pass what we call the \u2018Who Cares Test.\u2019 They didn\u2019t excite anyone, or give them a reason to care.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We went back to the drawing board with a series of free-for-all brainstorms, where our only rule was: Don\u2019t try to sell insurance. We threw around ideas\u2013ranging from a feed full of donkey asses to photographs of clouds around the world\u2014but nothing stood out.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We needed a new creative solution. One of Lemonade\u2019s backend engineers recommended a brainstorm driven by design thinking, a data-driven technique that helps conjure new ideas from thin air. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Harnessing the power of design thinking<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ideou.com\/blogs\/inspiration\/what-is-design-thinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Design thinking<\/a> instructed us to bring in a diverse group from different departments, backgrounds, and ages to avoid groupthink and encourage out-of-the-box ideas. So we created a brainstorm group of product managers, designers, and storytellers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brainstorm was silent, to make sure everyone\u2019s voice was heard equally without wasting time or fixating on one idea too quickly.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We kicked off with a specific prompt, to avoid losing focus: the slide below, which lists popular Instagram elements on the left, and Lemonade brand elements on the right. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked the group to mash the terms up and generate as many ideas as possible, without getting caught up on whether or not they were practical. The more ideas we\u2019d have, the greater our chance of coming up with something crazy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9151 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/image-3-1024x632.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"632\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/image-3-1024x632.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/image-3-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/image-3-768x474.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/image-3.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our resulting mashups ranged from the generic (\u2018beautiful design\u2019) to the unexpected (\u2018satisfying insurance\u2019) and the bizarre (\u2018sexy adulting\u2019). Rather than narrowing them down, design thinking encouraged us to expand and build off of each. So we read the mashups silently, and jotted down <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ideas they sparked. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8972 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Image-from-iOS-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"866\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Image-from-iOS-1-1.jpg 866w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Image-from-iOS-1-1-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Image-from-iOS-1-1-768x575.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 866px) 100vw, 866px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To build consensus, we voted on our favorites from among the 80+ written on Post-It notes.&nbsp; This time, we did try to keep practicality in mind\u2026 What could we actually produce?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The concept with the most votes? \u201cDip items in pink paint.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>One very pink idea<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design thinking cautions to never land on an idea until you build a prototype. So we gathered a plastic bin, gallons of pink paint, and a black background, and set up shop in the attic of Lemonade\u2019s Tel Aviv office one pre-COVID morning. We were ready to dip tons of random items.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 700px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-8928-1\" width=\"700\" height=\"700\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/instagram_pink.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/instagram_pink.mp4\">https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/instagram_pink.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<p>But would the content pass the Who Cares Test? Would it ignite curiosity from our audience? Could it scale?<\/p>\n<p>After seeing that the idea worked, we decided to move forward. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the fun began.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We sourced over 70 items from Team Lemonade and local thrift shops, from a briefcase to dusty records to a pile of Slinkys. \u2018Dipping Day\u2019 was an invigorating mess, in every sense of the word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9113\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/3-1-893x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Instagram Content Production\" width=\"700\" height=\"803\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/3-1-893x1024.jpg 893w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/3-1-262x300.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/3-1-768x881.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/3-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Telling an #OddlySatisfying story<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We lightly edited the videos to make them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/oddly-satisfying-videos-instagram-reddit\/\">Oddly Satisfying,<\/a> while still retaining their DIY spirit. And then we set out to write captions. Some resonated more than others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Puns about the dipped items didn\u2019t engage our audience, but behind-the-scenes stories about our company culture did. So we used captions to offer a transparent look at Lemonade\u2014sharing the stories behind the items, or our list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/creating-meaningful-conversations\/\">52 deep questions<\/a> that we use at team lunches. We also asked our followers what we should dip next. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9120\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2-2.png\" alt=\"Instagram Post Content\" width=\"700\" height=\"821\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2-2.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2-2-256x300.png 256w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2-2-873x1024.png 873w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/2-2-768x900.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/social-impact-meets-insurance\/\">Giveback partners,<\/a> we periodically changed the colors of the paint \u2014using blue to spotlight World Water Day with our partner charity: water, and grey to highlight 350.org\u2019s efforts to rein in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/divest_coal\/\">polluting effects of coal.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9055\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4-1-1024x604.png\" alt=\"Posting on Instagram\" width=\"700\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4-1-1024x604.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4-1-300x177.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4-1-768x453.png 768w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/4-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also forged online connections with Oddly Satisfying artists and curators, who helped our videos get exposure by reposting. This brought thousands of new community members.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>When one door closes&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after six months of posting dipping videos, our audience grew fatigued. How many times can you watch items being dipped in pink paint before it gets\u2026 a little old?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was time to pivot. But we wanted to stick with an artistic concept, and create something that\u2019s both homemade and not focused on insurance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To come up with a new concept, our creative team riffed off of a prompt inspired by design thinking: If you had one photo of a man sitting on a toilet, how would you edit it to make each and every post different from the next?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This led us down a rabbit hole of ideas. We iterated on several, and even produced some.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But then Covid-19 flipped the world upside down, and we were suddenly faced with the new challenge of working from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How could we produce Instagram videos while quarantining? And since creatives were being hit hard by the pandemic, how could we support artists in our community? <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>From \u2018Covered\u2019 to \u2018Connected\u2019<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While all of these restrictions seemed, well\u2026 restricting\u2026 having a clear focus and specific framework was actually liberating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We landed on a new concept: Stick with the \u201cdripping\u201d theme, and ask artists to create an&nbsp; interpretation of the drip, in their own style.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We commissioned artists around the world to start with a drip that begins at the top of the frame, and ends at the bottom, using Lemonade Pink predominantly (hex code: #ff0083).&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens in between is up to them. We launched a new online publication, <a href=\"http:\/\/ff0083.com\">#FF0083,<\/a> to share behind-the-scenes details of each piece, as well as info on the artists\u2019 creative inspirations and side projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram has always been our playground for exploration. This new feed is the natural evolution, because our virtual art gallery is no longer about us\u2014it\u2019s about a community of people who love art, design, and giving back.
