If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re hopefully already registered to vote, or plan to do so before the<\/span>\u00a0upcoming election (kudos!). You also probably know that many Americans are <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> registered, and won’t register.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost 92 million eligible Americans did not vote in the 2016 presidential election; that’s over 10 times the population of all of New York City. Registering\u2013and subsequently voting\u2013is crucial for the integrity of the nation\u2019s democracy. The upcoming election might determine the nation’s political course for decades to come.<\/span><\/p>\n

With so much on the line, why is there still such a massive gap between the number of eligible voters and the number of people who actually register to vote?<\/span><\/p>\n

The answer is simple, but a bit disheartening. Due to the drop-in-the-bucket effect (read: \u201cmy vote won\u2019t actually make a difference\u201d), many of us may not be motivated to register, let alone actually exercise the right to vote. More recent events, from the pandemic to the cynical war on mail-in voting, are only exacerbating this effect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s change that.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re anything like us, you probably have a lot to say to your friends, family, and colleagues who you know aren\u2019t registered. But it turns out that screaming at, crying to, or threatening your loved ones may actually dissuade them from registering\u2026 and can also potentially get you into legal trouble. Who knew?<\/span><\/p>\n

So, we\u2019re turning to our pal science (more specifically, psychology and behavioral econ<\/a>) to determine the best way to persuade your friends to <\/span>register<\/span>. By the end of this, you\u2019ll basically be a voter-registration Svengali, a master of persuasion for social good. <\/span><\/p>\n

Below, some bite-sized tips to get your pals registered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Induce FOMO<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What to say:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cI talked to Jordan, Leah, Manuela, and Nico, and they\u2019re all <\/span>registered<\/span>. Are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why it works:<\/b><\/p>\n

Whether we can admit it to ourselves or not, we all want to fit in. A key finding in behavioral science is that humans are motivated to do what other people around them are doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying to your friends, \u201cYou need to register to vote, because not enough people are registering!\u201d might seem like an obvious approach, but it may ultimately be counterproductive. After all, who wants to go do something that barely anyone else is doing anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n

A little good-natured peer pressure can convince your friends that registering to vote is something everyone should be doing.<\/p>\n

Professor Dan Ariely, Lemonade\u2019s Chief Behavioral Officer<\/a>, suggests inducing FOMO by saying, \u201cEveryone\u2019s doing it\u2014go register!\u201d If you tell your friends that you and the rest of your social circle are already registered, they\u2019ll likely be more compelled to register themselves. It\u2019ll establish that being registered is the norm, and is expected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If all else fails, lean on the power of embarrassment<\/a>. Shouldn’t admitting that you’re not registered to vote be as shameful as bragging about how you never wear a seatbelt?<\/span><\/p>\n

And remind your friends how totally bone-headed they\u2019ll feel if they show up to a polling location\u2014bravely risking exposure to Covid-19\u2014only to be told… they\u2019re not even registered to vote. Huge facepalm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Call them names<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re a registered voter, right?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why it works:<\/b><\/p>\n

According to behavioral science, the difference between \u2018registering\u2019 and being called a \u2018registered voter\u2019 is more significant than you\u2019d think.<\/span><\/p>\n

While \u2018registering\u2019 is a one-time action, being already \u2018registered\u2019 is sort of like an aspect of your identity, a badge of pride. It means you\u2019re an upstanding citizen: politically conscious, socially active, patriotic, or all of the above.<\/span><\/p>\n

Identifying as a registered voter is important\u2014and it signals to those around you that you actually care about a better future.<\/p>\n

If your friends perceive themselves possessing those qualities, they\u2019ll likely want to call themselves a \u2018registered voter.\u2019 They\u2019ll feel compelled to register so they can align with that identity, fit in with their group of friends, and avoid cognitive dissonance (read: having inconsistent beliefs).<\/span><\/p>\n

Make a concrete plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cWhere are you registering to vote, and how are you doing it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why it works:<\/b><\/p>\n

Have you ever told yourself, \u201cI\u2019m going to exercise more,\u201d but failed to follow through? Or promised that you\u2019ll budget better, but fell short? This is what\u2019ll probably happen to some of your friends on <\/span>Voter Registration Day<\/span>\u2014they\u2019ll tell themselves they\u2019ll <\/span>register,<\/span> but won\u2019t actually make the time to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n

Countless studies have shown that we\u2019re more likely to translate goals into actions if we make a concrete plan. Not only that, but we\u2019re even more likely to follow through with a commitment if we vocalize it to friends or family (or to ourselves).<\/span><\/p>\n

Asking a friend specifically when, where, and how they\u2019ll <\/span>register<\/span> won\u2019t only help them develop a plan, but will also eliminate any excuses for not doing so. Professor Ariely suggests asking your friends to add ‘register to vote’ to their calendar, or even utilizing the buddy system. A voter registration buddy can have the same effect as a running buddy\u2014someone else to motivate you can be key!<\/span><\/p>\n

Counter apathy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What to say:<\/b><\/p>\n

\u201cYes, yes, 2020 is absolutely nuts and often nightmarish. But registering\u2013and voting\u2013is important.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why it works:<\/b><\/p>\n

Because it actually freaking matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Naysayers have long claimed that voting doesn\u2019t matter, or that the choice between two opposing candidates is like the difference between Coke and Pepsi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This year takes things up a notch. Between the inequity of the electoral college, voter suppression, the war against mail-in voting, and some pre-emptive attempts to declare the election results illegitimate\u2014there\u2019s a lot to be wary of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There likely won\u2019t ever be a candidate whose views and opinions perfectly mirror your own. Remind your apathetic friends that a vote for the candidate whose views are <\/span>closest<\/span><\/i> to their own is not a meaningless vote.
