Today is Giveback Day, and we wanted to share some of the stats, implications and feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What&#8217;s a Giveback?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A quick reminder: when you sign on for Lemonade, we ask you to choose your \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/giveback\">Giveback<\/a>\u2019 cause. People choosing the same cause form a \u2018virtual group;&#8217; behind the scenes, we use their premiums to pay their claims, and we Giveback any leftover money to their common cause.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3665 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/image.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"797\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/image.png 797w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/image-300x104.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/image-768x266.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>So how much is the 2017 Giveback?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In dollar terms, the 2017 Giveback is $53,174, amounting to 10.2% of the revenues Lemonade recognized from its September launch until June 30th. Accounting rules mean that Lemonade\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"\/blog\/lemonade-insurance-crazy-market-share\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid growth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will only be recognized in next year\u2019s revenues, holding the promise of an exponentially larger Giveback in years to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So while dollar amounts are important for evaluating the impact of the 2017 Giveback, percentages provide a \u2018leading indicator\u2019 for how impactful Giveback can be as the business scales. In this report we\u2019ll cover both.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Giveback percentages<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had 21 cause-centric-groups as of June 30, and 14 (66.6%) received a Giveback. Among those 14, the average Giveback is 18% of its members\u2019 earned premiums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All told, Giveback this year amounts to slightly over 10% of our revenue. As a point of reference, the Fortune 100 give 0.08% of their revenues each year (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cecp.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/GIN2016_Finalweb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CECP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> p.36). So if year-one is anything to go by, Giveback has the potential to 100X that benchmark. Time will tell, but it&#8217;s an encouraging start. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1178\" style=\"width: 1025px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1178\" class=\"wp-image-1178 size-full\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/giveback-amounts.png\" alt=\"Revenue Donated to Non-Profits in Lemonade's Giveback\" width=\"1015\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/giveback-amounts.png 1015w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/giveback-amounts-300x220.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/giveback-amounts-768x564.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1015px) 100vw, 1015px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: CECP<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the change in scale, Giveback is a change in kind, because it <a href=\"\/blog\/worlds-public-benefit-insurance-company\/\">isn\u2019t dependent on profits<\/a> (Lemonade hasn\u2019t turned a profit yet). We think of Giveback as a social contract among our community, where the size and allocation is determined not by our big profits or big hearts, but by the good fortune and good behavior of our members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you\u2019d expect, the fortunes of our members varied, dependent on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/claims\">claims<\/a>. Some groups had no claims at all, and 40 cents of every dollar these members paid went to their cause. These include MEET (bringing Palestinian and Israeli youth together through technology) and New Story (transforming slums into homes). The New York Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children (The NYSPCC) came close, with a 36% Giveback (meaning their supporters had only a 4% \u2018loss ratio\u2019).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other causes had a bunch of claims, leaving nothing for Giveback this year. Unfortunately, the Friends of Firefighters, for example, won\u2019t be getting a Giveback this year, ironically because of a huge fire-related claim. Hopefully, next year they will. The model always predicted that not every group will get a Giveback every year, though we hope most groups will have more good years than bad. Again, time will tell.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The impact of $53,174<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While we expect the Giveback to grow as we grow, in the right hands, $53,174 can already be impactful. Well, 2017\u2019s Giveback is in the right hands! A complete list of the 14 Giveback causes is detailed at the end of this post, but here\u2019s a sample of those dollars at work:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-charitywater\/\">charity: water&#8217;<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-charitywater\/\"><strong>s<\/strong><\/a> mission is to bring clean and safe drinking water to every person in the world. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the 31% Giveback to charity: water, Lemonade members financed the rehabilitation of a well serving an entire community in Malawi!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-citymeals-on-wheels\/\"><b>Citymeals on Wheels<\/b><\/a>\u00a0funds weekend, holiday and emergency meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers who can no longer shop or cook for themselves. The Lemonade team hand-delivered meals to homebound elderly New Yorkers for July 4th, with the 16% Giveback funding 592 meals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-new-story\/\">New Story<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>builds safe homes for the homeless, and aims to transform slums into thriving communities in the developing world.<b>\u00a0<\/b>They help people like Ernesto &amp; Vilma Elizabeth Alfaro Quit\u00e9\u00f1o, who lived with their two children in one room in the back of a family member\u2019s house in El Salvador.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That one room served as their bedroom, living room and kitchen. No longer. Through the 40% Giveback, Lemonade\u2019s members have built a new home for the Quite\u0301n\u0303o family, from start to finish!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-robin-hood\/\"><b>Robin Hood Foundation<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finds, funds, and creates programs and schools for families in NY\u2019s poorest neighborhoods. Through the 6% Giveback to Robin Hood, the Lemonade community provided<\/span> one night of safe shelter for 35 families.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-win\/\">Women In Need (WIN)<\/a><\/strong> provides safe housing, critical services, and ground-breaking programs to empower homeless women and children. Through the 14% Giveback, the Lemonade community funded a childcare center with food, formula and diapers for six months.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Giveback is going to meaningful places, impacting causes our community cares about, whether across the street or across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For us, Team Lemonade, this is deeply gratifying. At the end of the day, \u2018<a href=\"\/blog\/its-not-our-money\/\">it\u2019s not our money<\/a>.&#8217; It\u2019s money our community has entrusted to us, first and foremost to help our members recover from unfortunate events in their lives, and secondly to help the less fortunate in our broader community. We feel privileged to do both &#8211; and are grateful to our community for the trust and support. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thank you!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The 2017 Lemonade Giveback supported these charities as well:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-aclu\/\">ACLU<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>aims to protect and defend American rights, values, and liberties. Through the 2% Giveback to ACLU, the Lemonade community supported the ACLU\u2019s Project on Speech, Privacy, and Technology, which works to protect freedom of expression in its many forms, including protest, media, online speech, and the arts.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-american-red-cross\/\"><strong>American Red Cross<\/strong><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. The 5%\u00a0Giveback will go towards <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">providing meals to 50 people post-disaster.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-code-to-inspire\/\"><strong>Code To Inspire<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teaches Afghan female students how to code in the hopes to create social, political, and economic equality. Through the 4% Giveback to Code To Inspire, Lemonade members financed six months of sustainable energy for the school where girls study coding in Afghanistan!<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-evolve-creative-alliance\/\"><b>Evolve Creative Alliance<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0partners with public and charter schools to provide students with a positive environment and a holistic experiential education. Through the 11% Giveback, the Lemonade community bought a week of supplies for hands-on activities and experiential learning for 1st and 2nd graders in Evolve Creative Alliance&#8217;s Explore Express Afterschool program.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-feeding-america\/\">Feeding America&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mission is to feed America\u2019s hungry through a network of member food banks and engage the country in the fight to end hunger.\u00a0Through the 19%\u00a0Giveback to Feeding America, the Lemonade community provided 33,924 meals to hungry Americans.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>Make A Wish<\/strong>\u00a0foundation grants wishes for children diagnosed with a life-threatening medical conditions every 37 minutes, on average, in the United States. Through the 0.5% Giveback, the Lemonade community was a part of granting a child&#8217;s one-true-wish.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-meet\/\"><strong>MEET<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0brings together young Israeli and Palestinian leaders to create positive change through technology and entrepreneurship, in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Through the 40% Giveback to MEET, the Lemonade community sponsored a field trip for young Israeli and Palestinian leaders to meet with tech industry leaders.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-nyspcc\/\"><strong>The NYSPCC<\/strong><\/a> (T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he New York<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) offers and promotes programs that prevent child abuse and lessen its harmful effects.<\/span>\u00a0Through the 34% Giveback to The NYSPCC, the Lemonade community supported sexual abuse prevention workshops, which teach children what to do if they ever feel at risk<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"\/blog\/giveback-2017-teach-for-america\/\"><b>Teach For America <\/b><\/a>works to give all children in the United States the opportunity to attain an excellent education.
