And the thing is, there\u2019s no infrastructure to deal with this waste\u20146.3 billion of those tons will never meet a recycling bin, according to a study published by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science Advances<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s equivalent to the weight of one <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">billion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> elephants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastic is making headlines for its devastating impact on our oceans and marine life. It constitutes around 90% of all trash floating on the ocean\u2019s surface, according to Earth\u2019s Oceans Foundation. Not only does that kill millions of endangered sea life every year, but also leads fish to ingest microplastics\u2014teeny tiny bits of plastic broken down by ultraviolet light and waves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not only problematic for sea life; it\u2019ll ultimately get to us when we eat sea life. Microplastics have been found in sea salt and even mineral water, according to a study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water Research.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Companies and politicians are finally taking cues from environmental activists to reduce our plastic usage. But on a personal level, have you ever sat down to think about how much single-use plastic you really use?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Plastic production is booming<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans have produced <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plasticoceans.org\/the-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more plastic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the last 10 years than during the whole of the last century. One million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute, according to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the numbers are rising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastics have helped advance space exploration, aviation, and medicine. The problem with plastic is that we produce it for things we<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to nonprofit Plastic Oceans, roughly half the world\u2019s plastic is used just one time\u2013like that plastic straw in your iced coffee, or the cutlery you get with your takeout order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes plastic more problematic is that it\u2019s nonbiodegradable and can stick around for up to 1,000 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve been told time and time again that recycling is the solution to the plastic problem. However, the issue is too big for just recycling to fix, and may distract us from the real problem: our overproduction of plastics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These stats aren\u2019t meant to drag you down, and don\u2019t think that the fight against plastic is a lost cause. It\u2019s a wake-up call to action, for the sake of our planet and generations to come. Currently, there\u2019s a positive EU-wide trend towards less plastic usage, with plastic straws and disposable tableware to be banned across the EU from 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government regulations like these are key. But here are some practical ways\u00a0 you can personally join in the anti-plastic movement and make everyday changes to help reduce plastic pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8640\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/fish.png\" alt=\"Plastic Pollution Fish\" width=\"914\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/fish.png 914w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/fish-300x155.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/fish-768x397.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 914px) 100vw, 914px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. Stop using plastics <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sounds obvious (and hard), right? Yes\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/breaking-bad-habits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">habits are hard to break<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But to really test yourself, take note of how many times you habitually encounter single-use plastic in your day-to-day. Keep a written record if you can!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, pinpoint the instances that are truly unnecessary. Maybe you\u2019re buying things in small packages, when you could buy in bulk. Maybe you ordered an ice cream in a plastic cup, rather than a cone. Be conscious of these small decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, come up with a plan to eliminate (or at least drastically cut) your unnecessary plastic usage. While making a single environmental choice won\u2019t help much on its own, creating positive habits to reduce your plastic usage could go a long way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, there are dozens of quick hacks that make it easier than ever to cut down on your plastic usage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you love your morning coffee, either brew it at home and take it to work in a thermo-mug, or keep a reusable mug in your bag for your morning coffee break. At the very least, buy a metal straw, and take it with you to your local coffee shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initiative <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsr.de\/betterworldcup-24420.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better-World-Cup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Berlin is leading the way to drastically reduce the consumption of disposable cups. So if you get your morning brew in a caf\u00e9 that participates in the movement, you\u2019ll not only enjoy their coffee, but at the same time receive a discount if you bring your own cup.\u00a0 An additional option is to make use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/recup.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RECUP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a country-wide deposit system for coffee-to-go cups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another rather obvious thing to do is to avoid using plastic bottles. Tap water <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quality\u00a0 in Germany is ge<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nerally pretty good\u2014so health-wise there\u2019s no actual need to rely on bottled water.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, make use of your good <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">old Brita water filter, o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r if you\u2019re into sparkling water, buy a Sodastream. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fun fact:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can actually refill your reusable water bottles on the go, thanks to over 5200 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/refill-deutschland.de\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refill Station<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and wells throughout Germany.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8642\" style=\"font-size: inherit;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/travel_mug.png\" alt=\"Travel Mug No Plastic\" width=\"914\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/travel_mug.png 914w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/travel_mug-300x148.png 300w, https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/travel_mug-768x378.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 914px) 100vw, 914px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groceries and supermarkets have also embraced the fight on plastic for several years by now, namely by charging for plastic bags. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the plan for this year is for them to completely disappear from the stores. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Thankfully, many of us are already carrying one of those cute foldable bags in their backpack at all times, in order to avoid those \u201coh no, I forgot to bring a bag again!\u201d situations. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>2. <b>Buy more sustainable clothing<\/b><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to estimates by the World Conservation Union (IUCN), about 1.5 million tons of microplastics end up in the sea every year. Two thirds of these are fibers from clothing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what can you actually do about it?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to minimize the amount of clothes you own made from polyester and nylon. Instead, you should focus on buying natural fibers such as cotton, bamboo or hemp. And remember: Less is more \ud83d\ude09. Do you really need an entirely fresh wardrobe every season?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are all familiar with the phenomenon of having a closet full of clothes\u2014but nothing to wear. Buy smart, purchasing items that you can combine. If you feel like you do or you really crave some new showstoppers, go visit some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.top10berlin.de\/de\/cat\/shopping-271\/second-hand-shops-861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thrift stores in your neighborhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You\u2019re not only helping the environment by buying second-hand clothes, but you\u2019ll also be wearing unique pieces that nobody else has.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also suggest motivating yourself (and others!) to stop using so much plastic through the power of social influence. In an interview with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hidden Brain, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral Economist and Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman said that the best way to nudge people towards making environmentally conscious decisions is through social proof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if you know that \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(aka, the people you know) pays more attention to their plastic usage, you\u2019ll be much more likely to stop than if you simply hear a statistic about the harms of plastic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So gather your friends and work together. Whether it\u2019s arranging a clothes-swap with your buddies, co-workers or your community, or sharing on your favorite social media platform when you found a nice new store that sells great second-hand clothing, push one another to be mindful of our environment<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Food &amp; Packaging <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you love ordering\u00a0 takeout from your favorite Chinese restaurant, tell them you don\u2019t want any plastic cutlery delivered. And, if you\u2019re really committed to the cause, hop on your bike and pick up the food with reusable containers!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can apply this thinking to your grocery shopping, too. Buying in bulk will cut down on plastic packaging, and it won\u2019t hurt your bank account either. Today, there are more sustainable-friendly stores than ever that allow <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you to bring your own containers from home when buying bulk goods. To find the closest option near you, check out this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/enorm-magazin.de\/lebensstil\/nachhaltiger-konsum\/zero-waste\/unverpackt-laeden-deutschland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of zero waste shops all over Germany, divided by county.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zero Waste Nerd <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/_wastelandrebel_\/?hl=de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shia Su<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that if you want to skip wrapped fruits and veggies and can afford to buy organic, try local farmers markets, join a CSA (community supported agriculture) or order organic produce boxes (\u201cBiokisten\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even tech companies are taking notice of plastic waste\u2014 Apple has already made changes to the iPhone packaging, using 84% less plastic, according to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business Insider<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>4. Support the cause<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forward-thinking companies like Loop are offering a new zero-waste platform. The program allows consumers to purchase products made from reusable containers that can be returned and reused. For now, Loop is available in New York and Paris and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has just launched a pilot program in the UK, partnering with Tesco. However, it\u2019s planning to expand to additional countries in 2021, including Germany.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another approach is supporting non-profit organizations that are working tirelessly to help solve the plastic problem. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ozeankind.de\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozeankind<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an environmental NGO and a member of Lemonade\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonade.com\/de\/en\/giveback\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giveback<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, gathers volunteers for their so-called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastikrebell <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleanup events in order to collect as much plastic and trash as possible. Since November 2017, when the first cleanup event took place, more than 1,000 people in 36 countries have participated in 20 events and have managed to collect more than 55 tons of waste!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oneearth-oneocean.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Earth &#8211; One Ocean<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another wonderful environmental nonprofit in Lemonade\u2019s Giveback program. With the help of their \u2018Marine Litter Cleanup\u2019 concept, they use special waste-collection ships to gather plastic, which is then recycled or converted into sulphur-free heating oil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there\u2019s no magic way to cure our plastic problem, there <\/span><b>is<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a growing movement of concerned individuals and communities who are working together to create change.
