Lemonade’s preventative care options provide comprehensive coverage for your pet’s routine health needs. By adding preventative care to your pet’s Lemonade health insurance policy, you can ensure that your furry friend receives regular care to maintain their overall health and well-being.
This coverage helps manage and reduce out-of-pocket expenses for routine veterinary visits, giving you confidence while supporting your pet’s long-term health. Coverage options and availability vary by state.
There’s a good chance you’re already paying more out-of-pocket than the cost of our preventative care packages for your pet’s ongoing health care, and by adding one to a Lemonade policy you’ll be covered for all kinds of things that help keep your pet healthy, like wellness exams, bloodwork, vaccines, and more.
Routine Vet Care (Available nationwide)
Adding our basic preventative package to your pet’s base policy comes with plenty of advantages. Plus, preventative care is not subject to your policy’s annual deductible.
You get covered for essential vaccinations, as well as annual wellness testing that can help detect health problems early. You’ll also be covered for annual screening for parasites (catching an issue early could spare you treatment costs from $400 to $1,000) and heartworm testing, as well as an annual wellness exam for your cat or dog.
Here’s what can be covered as part of our Routine Vet Care package*:
- 1 Wellness exam per year
- 3 vaccines per year
- Annual wellness testing including:
- Fecal or Internal Parasite Test
- Bloodwork
- Heartworm or FeLV/FIV Test
Is Routine Vet Care right for you?
Routine Vet Care is a strong fit for owners of adult cats or dogs who are generally healthy and mainly need coverage for their annual checkup, core vaccines, and parasite screening. If your pet is between 2 and 7 years old and you’re spending 200–400 per year on wellness visits out-of-pocket, this plan is likely to offset or exceed that cost.
It’s a solid starting point for first-time pet insurance buyers who want to build a consistent wellness routine.
If your vet hasn’t flagged any specific upcoming procedures: no dental cleanings, no spay/neuter, no specialty prevention meds – Routine Vet Care covers what most healthy adult pets actually need.
Routine Vet Care Plus (Available in select states)
Want to get even more for your pet? Our enhanced plan includes wellness exams and vaccines, plus Life Essentials coverage: our most comprehensive preventative benefits.
The Life Essentials benefit can help cover things like heartworm and flea/tick prevention medication, spay/neuter procedures, microchipping, gastropexy, and even genetic testing and preventative imaging. It’s designed to support your pet’s health throughout their entire life.
Here’s what can be covered as part of our Routine Vet Care Plus package*:
- Wellness exams
- Vaccines
- Annual wellness testing including:
- Fecal or Internal Parasite Test
- Bloodwork
- Heartworm or FeLV/FIV Test
- Life Essentials coverage including:
- Spay/neuter, microchip, gastropexy
- Heartworm/flea/tick prevention medication
- Deworming, nail trimming, urinalysis
- Joint screening, organ screening, blood testing
- Blood pressure monitoring, genetic testing
- Preventative x-rays and ultrasounds
Note: The Routine Vet Care Plus package does not include coverage for routine dental cleanings. This coverage is provided under the Dental Care add-on.
Is Routine Vet Care Plus right for you?
Routine Vet Care Plus builds on the base plan with additional wellness and vaccine coverage. It’s designed for pet owners who want more than the essentials but aren’t yet facing specific high-cost procedures.
If you’re in a state where this plan is available and your pet’s needs fall somewhere between basic annual care and more comprehensive procedure coverage, check whether Routine Vet Care Plus or one of the newer plans is the better fit for your situation.
Preventative+ Care package
Want to get even more for your pet? We’ve got options if you’re ready to level up…
The Preventative+ plan includes all of the basic benefits, and it also allows us to reimburse you for heartworm or flea/tick medication, as well as routine dental cleaning.
For most dogs, dental cleaning requires anesthesia and can last over an hour. If your pet is young and healthy, a regular cleaning could be $500 to $1,000, on average. That’s not a typo. For an older dog with oral health issues, the cost could actually be over $1,000. That’s a big hit to your finances, and it might make the Preventative+ plan a good option to consider.
While dental cleaning bills for cats are more modest (sometimes as low as $200) certain feline teeth can require extra attention, bumping the cost of vet bills. It wouldn’t be unheard of to spend $1,000 on your cat’s dental care.
Here’s what can be covered as part of our Preventative+ Care Package*:
- 1 Wellness exam
- 3 Vaccines
- Wellness testing:
- Fecal or Internal Parasite Test
- Bloodwork
- Heartworm or FeLV/FIV Test
- Flea/Tick or Heartworm Medication
- Routine dental cleaning
Is Preventative+ right for you?
The Preventative+ package is the right choice for pet owners whose dogs or cats need annual dental cleanings – which is most of them, eventually. Veterinary dental cleanings are one of the most underestimated routine expenses: 500–1,000 for dogs, and up to $1,000 for cats.
Preventative+ covers routine dental prophylaxis (the standard cleaning your vet performs as part of a wellness visit) up to $150 per year — it doesn’t cover treatment for dental illness, so if your vet has flagged an existing issue, check what your base policy covers there.
It’s also a solid fit if you’re already paying out-of-pocket for flea/tick or heartworm prevention medication and want that cost bundled in. If your main priorities are dental and preventative meds, and you don’t need spay/neuter or more advanced procedure coverage – Preventative+ hits that specific sweet spot.
Puppy/Kitten Preventative Care package
Bringing home a new furry addition can be really exciting, but it can also be a little scary. Puppies and kittens are adorable, but getting them set up for a long and healthy life requires loads of vaccines, tests, and a few strategic snips.
Lemonade’s Preventative Care Package for Puppies and Kittens can help cover some of those initial veterinary costs for your young pet, including: two wellness exams, enhanced vaccination coverage, and coverage towards your puppy or kitten’s spay or neuter procedure and microchip implantation and registration.
Here’s what can be covered as part of our Puppy/Kitten Preventative Care Package*:
- 2 Wellness exams
- Up to 6 vaccines
- Wellness testing:
- Fecal or Internal Parasite Test
- Bloodwork
- Heartworm or FeLV/FIV Test
- Flea/Tick or Heartworm Medication
- Spay/Neuter procedure
- Microchipping
Keep in mind, you can only add our Puppy/Kitten Preventative Care package if your pet is under two years old.
Is the Puppy/Kitten package right for you?
This package is exclusively for pets under two years old, and it’s specifically built around the higher veterinary demands of young animals. Puppies typically need 3–4 rounds of core vaccines in their first year alone, and kittens follow a similarly intensive schedule.
The package covers two wellness exams, up to six vaccines, and puts money toward both a spay/neuter procedure and microchip implantation and registration – addressing the bulk of first-year veterinary costs in a single add-on.
If you just brought home a puppy or kitten and you’re staring down a year of vet visits, this is almost certainly the right starting point. You can reassess which plan fits best at renewal once your pet crosses into adulthood.
How to choose the right Preventative Care package
Not sure where to start? Run through these three questions before you pick a plan.
Step 1: What’s your pet’s age and life stage?
Under 2 years old? Start with the Puppy/Kitten package, it’s built for exactly this phase, with two wellness exams and up to 6 vaccines to get your pet fully protected.
Between 2 and 7 years old? That’s the healthy-adult window, and most pets in this range do well with Routine Vet Care or Preventative+ depending on whether dental care is on the horizon.
If you’re in a state where the newer Core Preventative Care or Enhanced Preventative Care plans are available, those may also be worth comparing.
Over 7 years? Talk to your vet about what’s coming up. Senior pets often have more preventative screenings recommended, and the right package depends on what your specific vet is likely to flag.
Step 2: What are you currently spending out-of-pocket?
Take five minutes and add up what you spent on wellness visits, vaccines, heartworm meds, and dental cleanings in the last 12 months. If that number is close to or higher than the cost of one of our preventative packages, you’ve already answered the question. Most pet owners are surprised to find they’re already in that range, especially once dental bills enter the picture.
Step 3: What has your vet actually recommended?
Your vet’s most recent wellness visit notes are the most useful thing you have.
- Did they mention dental cleaning? Preventative+ is likely your best fit, it covers routine dental prophylaxis up to $150 per year.
- Did they recommend gastropexy for your large-breed dog, or talk about spay/neuter timing for an adult pet? Look at the Enhanced Preventative Care plan if it’s available in your state – that’s where those procedure benefits live.
- If your pet is under two and spay/neuter is on the horizon, the Puppy/Kitten package covers that directly.
- If your vet gave your pet a clean bill of health and didn’t flag any upcoming procedures, Routine Vet Care may be all you need.

Reddit asked, we answered
What pet insurance covers wellness, dental, prescription food, etc?
Lemonade covers a lot, but it’s worth knowing what falls where. Routine wellness items like checkups and vaccines can be covered through a wellness add-on. Dental coverage is available as a separate add-on, covering things like cleanings and extractions depending on the plan. Prescription medications can be covered when they’re related to a covered condition. Prescription food, however, is not something Lemonade covers. The good news is you can customize your policy to include what your pet actually needs, without paying for extras that don’t apply to them. Read the full thread on Reddit
What's the best pet insurance for wellness coverage?
The best wellness coverage is customizable so you’re not overpaying for benefits you won’t use. Lemonade offers optional wellness add-ons to our base accident and illness coverage, including routine exams, vaccines, flea and heartworm prevention, and more. Do any pet insurances cover Heartgard and NexGard?
Yes, some of Lemonade’s preventative care options offer coverage for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention medications like Heartgard and NexGard as part of routine wellness care.
